Everything You Do is a Balloon

I had never seen this music video from Boards of Canada before, but I really like it now. It is entirely made up of footage from a bicycle safety film from the 60's called One Got Fat. It is horrifying, and its hard to take your eyes off of it once the creepiness kicks in. I had a strong urge to start working on making one of those masks as I watched it. The whole atmosphere reminded me of one of the segments from the anthology movie Trick R' Treat, which I love.

I came across this video on Unreality's list of eight disturbing music videos. There are a few more entries on there worth checking out if you like they type of thing.

Mischief. Mayhem. Soap.

We have this clear soap dispenser in our bathroom, and when we are lucky enough to need to refill it we are treated to a multi-day ballet. The past several times we have filled it with a different type of soap than was previously in it. One transparent and one opaque. The first day or two not much happens. But slowly they start to work into each other. So every time you go to wash your hands its slightly different than it was before. Eventually they turn into gauzy, delicate, transparent strands , and completely envelope each other. In any case, both my wife and I are fascinated by the process.

I tried to make one of those jittery 3D images, kinda worked

Chris Gethard Show Shirt

I was catching up on last night's Chris Gethard Show, since we missed the live broadcast on Wednesday evening, and was really excited to see my shirt design staring back at me. A couple of months ago I created an image of the Human Fish from the show for Chris to use for a shirt to gift to the cast and crew. I knew they got pushed back a little bit, but wasn't sure what would come of it. There they are! I counted about five or six people wearing them which was really cool to see. I also just finished reading Chris's book, A Bad Idea I'm About the Do. It's a really funny collection of autobiographical vignettes about growing up in New Jersey. Chris puts himself (in most cases) into some really hilarious situations, and I couldn't recommend it enough.

TEN YEARS

Today rounds out the best ten years of my life. I went on my first real date with my wife on February 15, 2002. We were living in Baltimore, both illustration students at MICA. We are now living about 10 blocks from the place we first met. Early on in our relationship we both recognized a lot of shared interests and values. It has been fun over time discovering all of the things we don't have in common. Those are the things that allow us to not just mirror each other, but to compliment each other. We have had our good times and bad times, but as time goes on I find myself reflecting on the good times much more often. The other things tend to fall by the wayside. It has been 10 years full of nerdy, passionate, comforting fun. I've been married to my best friend for three and a half years and can't wait to see what the next ten years together holds for us.

Moon Trip

I found this lovely item at an estate sale yesterday. It is a smallish, beautifully illustrated book about a hypothetical mission to the moon. It was originally printed in 1958, this edition was the third printing from 1961. This means that when the first edition was published, we had yet to put a man in space, let alone put one on the moon. So that makes this sci-fi to some degree.

The illustrations by Jerry Robinson are incredible. At first glance the book looks like it could be an indie comic that someone published last year. After looking up Jerry I realized I was already familiar with his work. He was a veteran comic artist and is best known for creating the Joker.

Sadly Jerry passed away last year, but obviously left behind quite a legacy. If the book strikes your fancy there are plenty of copies for sale on Amazon.

New (Old) Project

I am starting work again on a project I began a while ago. I'm going to keep the details quiet for the time being, but here is a little peek at what I was wrestling with today.

It doesn't look like much in the image and already looks completely different at this point. I'll let your imagination ponder what it is.

Also here is a look at my sad little floor workspace for the time being. I am trying to find a cool old beat up desk to call my own, but for now this is the studio.

I Fink U Freeky

Here is the new Die Antwoord video directed by Roger Ballen & NINJA. They again deliver a creepy/gorgeous video that feels like David Fincher , Shelby Lee Adams, and Chris Cunningham shared a fever dream. There is some NSFW language, and although the imagery isn't "offensive" you might feel a little icky watching it. With that I give you I Fink U Freeky.

They're Coming To Get You Barbara...

I was sad to see that Bill Hinzman passes away yesterday. I didn't know his name before seeing this article today, but I certainly know who he was. He played the first zombie we see in George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, and in doing so became the first modern cinema zombie. His slung jaw and lumbering stride became part of the blueprint that most most zombie movies stick to to this day. And for that I salute you sir. Embedded below is his moment in the spotlight.
